Ask the Question: About how many?

As we shared a couple of weeks ago, we’ve launched our own YouTube channel with a series of videos about the seven questions you can ask with Look-Think-Talk activities. We have hundreds of these activities on our website and one way to find just what you’re looking for is by focusing on the central mathematical question you will ask students to think about. Each question can lead to different kinds of big ideas, and in this series of videos we’ll share with you what opportunities posing a particular question can open up.

This week, we focus on the question: About how many? This is inherently a question of estimation, but estimation itself in not a single big idea. In fact, what makes estimation such a powerful mathematical act is that it requires coordinating many big ideas and mathematical practices. Watch our About how many? video to learn more about how and give one of these activities a try with your students tomorrow.

To multiplicity, cheers!
