Ask the Questions: What do you notice? What do you wonder?

This week we offer you the fourth installment in a series of videos on our YouTube channel about the seven questions you can ask with Look-Think-Talk activities. We have hundreds of these activities on our website and one way to find just what you’re looking for is by focusing on the central mathematical question you will ask students to think about. Each question can lead to different kinds of big ideas, and in this series of videos we’ll share with you what opportunities posing a particular question can open up.

This week, we focus on the questions: What do you notice? What do you wonder? A few months ago, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) pressed all math teachers to include this kind of activity regularly in their teaching. We think noticing and wondering is a powerful mathematical act that leads to even more – and more authentic – mathematics.  Watch our What do you notice?
